These are extracts from Minute Book of Local School Managers.
The early entries show the attempts by Beatrice and Ethel Pile to enter the teaching profession. From 1928 to 1934 John Pile sat on the Board of Managers. The Minute Book is in Lincolnshire Archives under "Billingborough Parish 16/2/1" |
| P168 1 April 1918 The correspondent reported that only one application had been received for the post of Supplementary Teacher in the infant's room, vacant through Miss Goy's leaving viz from Miss Beatrice Pile .... (as Beatrice had no experience it was recommended that she be appointed on a trial basis, as she was not 18 when interviewed she should be appointed as a monitoress) ... It was thereupon decided to offer the post to Miss Pile on those conditions. |
| P170 8 April 1918 The meeting reconsidered the appointment of Miss Pile. The girl's father having reported that she was born on 23 December 1899 but according to her entry in the admission register her age was given as 17 last December ... The Managers asked for the production of the girl's birth certificate. |
| P172 24 April 1918 The correspondent produced a certificate of the birth of Beatrice Pile this showed that the girl was 18 years old on Dec. 23 1917 Mr Stennett thereupon proposed and Mr Trusswell seconded and it was carried unanimously that Miss Pile be given a month's trial as Supplementary Teacher and that proving satisfactory she be paid a salary at the rate of £15 per annum until she is recommended by HM Inspector as being qualified to be put upon the permanent staff. The correspondent was instructed to forward this recommendation to the Education committee and he ask that she might commence her trial on May 1st. |
| P176 4 June 1919 The correspondent informed the meeting that he has received a communication from the Education office stating that as Dorothy Collishaw (monitoress in the infant's room) would be 18 on the 15th inst. he was instructed to take steps to terminate her engagement at the end of June, as girls of that age were required to seek appointments as Supplementary Teachers. It was mentioned that D. Collishaw had had 2 years + 4 month's experience and that when Miss Pile was appointed to fill the post of Supplementary Teacher in the infant's room it was on the understanding that when D. Collishaw was 18 she would be raised to the status of a Supplementary Teacher and that her services would be retained. It was therefore resolved on the motion of Mr Stennett, seconded by Mr Dawson that a recommendation should be sent to the Education office committee to retain Dorothy Collishaw - she being the longest and most experienced teacher and that Miss Pile's services should be dispensed with. At the same time the correspondent was instructed in giving Miss Pile notice to inform her that the Managers regretted the necessity for doing so and that they did not underestimate her services in the department: on the contrary they would do all they possibly could to secure her another position as Supplementary Teacher if she desired them to do so. |

| P210 1 July 1921 The Managers had before them a letter from the Education Office asking them to consider the question of finding a candidate more suitable than Ethel Pile as an entrant to the teaching profession, a report having been received from a correspondence class stating that Miss Pile was not qualified to take a course of instruction to prepare herself for the Preliminary Certificate examination. The correspondent was instructed to explain the circumstances to the girl's parents and report at a future meeting. |
| P214 18 July 1921 The case of Ethel Pile was again considered and Miss Pile attended the meeting and produced a typewritten slip from the Correspondence College which stated that as Ethel Pile was not 16 before July 31 1921 her age did not permit her taking the Preliminary Certificate examination until 1922.
